Malta Beaches in Winter: Għajn Tuffieħa

Do you have a happy place? Somewhere you find absolutely beautiful, tranquil and safe? For me, that place is Għajn Tuffieħa beach in Malta. It's situated right next to the tourist favourite Golden Bay but the 200 odd steps to get down to it seem to put most of the crowds off. In the heat of summer, I must admit, the steps aren't much fun and in the winter I suppose most people think it's just not worth it. To me, it's always worth it.

If you're ever stuck for ideas of things to do in Malta during the winter, I'd recommend going and visiting your favourite beach. A beach might not be the first choice of places to go when it's not boiling hot and raging sunshine, but beaches in Malta are worth visiting all year round. Be careful of the sea, of course, but use some common sense and you can have the perfect winters day. On warmer winter days, you can still lay out a blanket and soak up some warmth from the sun. On the cooler days, simply wrap up warm and hike along the coast line, or huddle with loved ones to keep warm, whilst taking in the scenery.

I love Għajn Tuffieħa beach in Malta, probably even more in the winter. It's usually completely deserted, even the cafes are shut, but it looks so much more beautiful this time of year. The cooler temperatures and occasional rain mean that the greenery and nature surrounding it have a chance to flourish and the mountainside comes alive with colour.

As well as the intense greenery surrounding the burnt orange/red sand, the waves are another sight to behold in winter. Malta is a windy country pretty much all year round, but in the colder months, it really steps up a notch. The sea is very shallow in this bay and the wind and roughness create gorgeous layered rippling waves rolling onto the beach. It's shallow, but it's incredibly dangerous, so unless you're a professional or experienced surfer, you shouldn't get anywhere near that water until the summer comes back around.

Għajn Tuffieħa is the perfect beach to enjoy in the winter in Malta. The sand is red, which adds a bit of character, the surrounding hills are picturesque and great for hikers, it even has it's very own Table Mountain. If you don't feel like the steps, just walk along the cliff face by the carpark and explore the abandoned fort, view the beach from above and watch the sun setting straight into the sea.

Some friends and I went along here for a picnic this weekend. We found a little shelter from the wind right up against the fort and huddled together whilst munching our sandwiches, drinking our coffee and enjoying the view of this tiny slice of paradise.
