Food Delivery in Malta 2022

Back in 2012 when I first wrote this post, it drove me insane that it was almost impossible to find a food delivery option in Malta that accepted card payments. Everything was done in cash, but nowadays this is a thing of the past. With amazing new services like Bolt Food and Time To Eat you can now order online, pay by card, keep track of your order at all stages and have a much wider selection of choice!

Whether you're looking for McDonalds or KFC delivery in Malta, Indian takeaway to be delivered, or home delivery for sushi, Chinese food, burgers, pasta or even Russian food, you will find what you are looking for. If you’re looking for ways to order- this is the place. Or if you’re looking for the best and worst food delivery restaurants in Malta, you’re in the right place.

Food delivery apps in Malta

Finally! It's 2021 and we now have a few different food delivery apps to choose from. If you look at food prices over the last few years, this new, more convenient way to order has definitely had an impact with prices rising way over the usual rate of inflation. So, Malta is no longer one of the cheapest places in Europe, but perhaps a small price to pay for additional convenience.

The best takeout delivery food in Malta

Here I will list the takeout delivery food services in Malta that meet some (very reasonable!) criteria such as:

  • more sustainable packaging

  • food quality - it arrives hot and tasty

  • quick order to delivery turnaround

❤️ Little Bones

USE CODE: RVWBW for €4 off your first THREE orders if you order via Wolt for the first time.

✅ Paper and foil packaging

✅The ONLY smashed burgers I found on the island

❌I’d like a few more ‘extras’ when adding to the burgers. Such a small thing but I’d like to be able to add sliced tomatoes for example.

I really struggled to find a downside here! I despise thick burgers and have found it impossible to find properly smashed burgers on the island but finally, Little Bones came into our lives! Lovely thin burgers, crispy on the edges, soft, juicy and super tasty. The burgers range from €8 - €12 but they don’t come with fries- you can add fries for €1.95 but that makes them a bit more expensive than other restaurants but the quality makes it worth it to me. The fries were good, not too oily, not over cooked, not dry and with a little seasoning.

They are “roasted and barbecued meat experts” so it’s one for the meat lovers. We are actively cutting back on meat but this is a lovely treat sometimes. They have roast chicken, rabbit and horse meat. Ribs of many varieties. Wings, burgers, hot dogs and snacks. You’ll even find some ftira, pasta, salads and some desserts. Definitely worth a try.

❤️ Lulu Cafe

✅ Mostly cardboard packaging

✅ Food is consistently good

✅ Prices are very reasonable

❌ The only downside for me is they don’t have coffees on the delivery menu. I usually just make coffee at home but sometimes you really fancy a nice cappuccino, you know?

So impressed with Lulu Cafe! It’s not often in Malta you find somewhere that is consistently good and they are now our go-to for breakfast orders. They have things like toasties, avocado toast, eggs Florentine, Norwegian and Benedict. Sweet breakfasts like a smoothie bowl, pancakes, french toast and croissants. Lots of sandwiches and baguettes and bagels. Definitely recommend!

❤️ Manouche (St Julians)

✅ Mostly cardboard packaging

✅ Food arrives hot

✅ Food arrives in great condition (i.e eggs intact, bread not soggy)

✅ Food tastes great

❌ Fried eggs are always a bit undercooked.

Guys, they are just GREAT! We ordered from them a few times now, usually getting things like the Breakfast Box (full English in a box) and the Django Bun and various pastries. The pastries are always amazing and nothing can really go wrong when delivering those. But what stands out is their fried eggs! They manage to box them up, or put them in the bun and they get to you in great shape! The breakfast is crispy where it should be crispy, runny where it should be runny. Consistently reliable. One time, I felt the eggs were significantly undercooked but, on the whole, a safe bet with great choices.

❤️ Sotto Pizzeria (Valletta)

✅ Card packaging

✅ Pizza is just as good delivered as it is when dining in

✅ Delicious taste every time!

One of my absolute favourite dine-in restaurants is now one of my absolute favourite takeout restaurants! This place does the best pizza I have ever eaten. It is authentic, it is delicious and it is just as good every single time. We had delivery a few times now, a few different pizzas and they always arrived hot and crispy. No cold, soggy pizza here! As it’s pizza, the packaging is all card, they don’t add in plastic cutlery for no reason like many places. DELICIOUS.

I strongly recommend the Carbonara, Cacio E Pepe and Margarita Con Bufala pizzas.

❤️ Prosciutteria (Gzira)

✅ Card packaging

✅ Pizza is just as good delivered as it is when dining in

✅ Delicious taste every time!

This restaurant is owned by the same family behind Sotto Pizzeria (and Zero Sei but I haven’t seen them doing deliveries yet - best pasta EVER) so you know it’s just as good. The menu selection is a little different. They have fewer pizza options than Sotto but have some cool extra things like ‘home cooking kits’ where you get all the ingredients needed to make some of their amazing pastas, although this isn’t something we tried yet. We just got a few pizzas as the opening times are a little different to Sotto.

I’d recommend checking them both out and using the one that’s nearer your home so the order arrives the fastest!

❤️ Novi Bar (Gzira)

✅ One of the best burgers in Malta

✅ They didn’t scrimp on shrimp in the tacos

✅ Very good value for money (€22 and we were both full)

❌ Seasoned fries were quite spicy

❌ Tacos came in those unrecycleable black plastic containers

In the past, pre-covid-19 days we had hit and miss experiences with food at Novi so I am super reluctant to put them in the ‘best’ category. But- literally everyone I know LOVES this place. People with lots of different tastes, from lots of different friend groups. Tonight we were peer pressured into getting something from Novi and it was really, really good. Usually I’d want at least a second great experience to be sure they are consistent but the adoring feedback from friends makes me think that maybe our less-than-good experience was the one off.

So, tonight we ordered the Legit Burger, seasoned fries and Cajun shrimp tacos. The only small negative is that the seasoned fries were pretty spicy and seasoned is not necessarily spicy and I don’t like spicy so I’d rather it was mentioned on the menu. But I still ate most of them!

The burger was tasty. The patty wasn’t too thick, and was crispy on the outside, which is how we love it. The bun was lovely, the sauce was good- an overall really great burger and in fact when I asked him how it ranks, Arvid said in that moment that he couldn’t think of a better burger he has had in Malta.

The tacos were really nice. I was worried that being “Cajun” might mean they could be spicy, so I had some yoghurt to hand, just in case, but they were very inoffensive. Very mild tasting but refreshing and filling and yum. There could have been less rucola. I am not a huge fan of rucola and they were quite packed with it. There was a LOT of shrimp, so that was great, but I’d like to have seen less rucola and more sweetcorn and tomatoes to make it perfect.

So overall, it was super good value for money (€22 total and we were full and happy), really tasty food, mostly cardboard packaging and we will absolutely be ordering again (and again, and again…).

Some OK options I get now and again

🤷‍♀️ Pastaus

✅ They manage to make pasta that travels well

✅ Tasty dishes

❌ Sometimes very OTT with the pepper

Pastaus in Valletta so almost made it onto the ‘best’ list but when I ordered a second time, they knocked themselves down a bit. Consistency is SUCH an issue in Malta. The first time we ordered from Pastaus we were very impressed. Pasta can be really hard to send as delivery food but it arrived super tasty, in good condition, still hot and whilst a bit soggier than you’d expect in-house, in very good condition considering. On this first occasion we ordered Arrabbiata and Bolognese and were very happy with both.

But they let me down the second time when I ordered Cacio e Pepe and Bolognese again. Bolognese was nice as ever but the Cacio e Pepe was really just a whole lot of Pepe. I love this dish but I’ve never seen the sauce almost black because there is SO much pepper. It was inedible. I would order from them again, just avoiding anything I think they might put pepper on. Unfortunately they are only on Wolt, not Bolt and on Wolt you cannot put a note with your order (i.e “no mushrooms” or “please, not excessively peppery!”)

🤷‍♀️ AvoTaco

✅ Mostly card packaging

✅ Food is OK but not the best

❌ Sauces come in those ‘plastic alternative’ pots which are JUST as bad as plastic in Malta (often worse as people put them in recycling and it can spoil a whole batch)

AvoTaco is one of those places that is usually not amazing and not one that’s in my favourites list but when I’m in the right mood, it’s OK. The food is alright, although it can get a bit pricy if you’re a big eater.

🤷‍♀️ Sea Salt Gourmet

✅ First time we ordered: amazing

❌ Second time we ordered: disappointing

I wanted to add Sea Salt Gourmet as we have eaten from there but I’m not sure where to put it yet as the two times were so different. The first time we ordered the Fish + Chips was AMAZING. The fries were so good, they boil the potatoes in vinegar so they had a delicious salt + vinegar flavour embedded in them. The fish was flakey and crumbly and crunchy. I was dreaming about it for days afterwards.

But the second time we ordered it, the fries were oilier and over fried and the fish was soggy and overall it was a bit of a let down. We haven’t given it a 3rd chance yet but if we do, I will be sure to update!

Takeout delivery food services in Malta that I wont be using again

👎 Vault1

✅ Mostly cardboard packaging

❌ Burger did not taste good

❌ Dessert did not taste good

❌ Quite a few things tasted off, like they were past their sell by.

I thought this was a safe bet as it was rated super highly on the Wolt app. But no, no, no. I don’t eat beef very often so I was really excited for having a big, juicy beef burger for the first time in a long time but this meal put me right off beef for a while (better for the environment at least!).

We ordered a beef burger, a hot dog and a brownie. The beef burger was just horrible. The fried egg was fried completely solid which is not what anyone is thinking when they see a fried egg on a burger and the beef itself just didn’t taste right. It was a really thick burger so it was all you could taste and it just tasted…off. The hot dog was OK, the fries were OK but the brownie also had something off about it. The brownie itself was fine, but either the biscuit balls or the sauce it was topped with tasted definitely past sell by. Overall, more on the expensive side and I ended up pulling out the beef and the egg and just eating the bun with the onions and (also not very nice) bacon.

👎 Corner Crave Bistro Sliema

✅ The carbonara tasted really good

❌ But it had an insane amount of pepper so was inedibly ‘spicy’

Not much else to say here. The carbonara otherwise tasted really nice but I could only manage a few bites as it was completely drowned in black pepper. A little bit is nice, but this was very unpleasant.

👎 Crust Bakery - Bar - Bistro

✅ Mostly cardboard packaging but the pie came with a plastic lid- it could easily have been put in a box (wrapped in foil as it already was) like the other items.

❌ Everything was just a little bit dry

❌ Overcooked egg

❌ Undercooked pie

❌ Only available on Wolt (my least favourite food delivery app)

I am so sad to be putting Crust in this category because, when it comes to dining in, I love them! The service is always really friendly and the food lovely (and instagrammable) but for takeout they just didn’t cut the mustard.

We ordered the Breakfast Bun, a steak and ale pie and a nutella donut. The food arrived quickly, which was a plus. Sometimes from St Julians it can take the better part of an hour to get to the Msida area. Most of the items were packaged in cardboard and, whilst it can’t be recycled when it’s soiled with food, it does at least break down in a more reasonable timeframe than plastic. However, the pie came in a card box with a plastic lid. I didn’t really see the need for this, as it was also wrapped in foil, so would have been just as fine in a fully card box like the other items.

Then the food was really just underwhelming.

For starters, I hate hate hate that on Wolt you cannot add a message with your order- like “no BBQ sauce” on the bun, for example. ALL OTHER food delivery apps have this feature but Crust can only be found on Wolt.

I don’t like BBQ so I’m glad it wasn’t drenched in sauce, but it was very dry, so had I been able to choose my own sauce, I’d have liked to to have had more. The fried egg was also way over fried so the yolk was solid- no one wants that in their bun.

The pie was also dry- it needed more jus/gravy/juices in order to be really tasty and the dough was undercooked and seemed raw in some places. Arv eats everything and he didn’t manage to finish it as he just was not enjoying it at all.

The nutella doughnut was the nicest bit of the meal but even that wasn’t great. Most of the nutella was out of the doughnut and in the box and the dough itself was also very dry and a little stale tasting.

Really wanted to love this place but it’s not somewhere we’d give a second chance to. Manouche does a very similar selection of items and for what we got, would have been cheaper and a lot nicer.

👎 New Yorks Best x Fat Louie’s

✅ Crispy chicken sandwich was really tasty

❌ The rest of the food was tough and dry

❌ Wings came in plastic for no real reason- could have been card like the rest

❌ On the expensive side considering the quality.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this place when it comes to eating in and these days tend to avoid it but Arvid really fancied ribs recently so we thought we’d give their delivery service a try. To start with, the menu is super limited. In general I think less is more when it comes to food menus but it meant there was really nothing I fancied on the menu so ended up settling for something (chicken burger) that I didn’t really feel like. I’d love to see a better selection of smaller appetisers. The selection is basically wings, burgers or beef.

Surprisingly the chicken burger ended up being the best bit. I enjoyed it, the pickles were sweet, which was a really nice contrast to the cheese and garlic mayo. The bun was lovely. It came with fries, which the menu didn’t state but ended up making it really good value for money at €9.50. The fries with the burger were nice- crispy and well seasoned.

Unfortunately the rest was a bit of a let-down. The ribs were too tough. They don’t have to be falling off the bone to be enjoyable but these were just too tough. The sauce was nice, but it’s not something we’d get again. The fries were placed under the ribs in the takeout box so ended up soggy and unappealing. The wings were also a let down- super dry and the meat inside a few of them was black and rancid looking, which really put us off.

Overall, not terrible but not great and not one we’d buy from again.

👎 Bandit

✅ Mostly card packaging

✅ Chicken nuggets were nice

❌ Most food was uninspiring

❌ Cheap ingredients

❌ Nothing special.

We were already set up for disappointment when the delivery took SO LONG. We ordered via Bolt Food, so it’s probably not Bandit’s fault but the order was stuck in ‘waiting to be picked up’ for absolutely ages and once it did get picked up it still took 30 minutes to get here as the driver seemed to go in completely the wrong direction.

But the food was underwhelming as a whole, delay aside. Yes, the “truffle & parmesan” fries were cold and soggy but they also had no parmesan. The cheese burger was uninspiring- not bad, not great. It came with a massive, soggy brown leaf of lettuce, which was not on the menu. Arvid hates lettuce in burgers and would have asked for it removed. The chicken nuggets were quite nice as was the garlic mayo. It was just blah.

👎 Asian Kingdom St Julians

❌ Plastic packaging

❌ Bland food

❌ Soups actually tasted bad.

The food from Asian Kingdom in St Julians was so bad. Please, do not eat here or order from here! We did a huge order, almost €60 for two people and got a selection of things including: fried chicken dumplings, crispy seaweed, chicken wings, edamame, chicken + sweetcorn soup, mixed veg with garlic, fried rice, steamed dumplings, half duck pancakes and quite a bit more.

Firstly, the packaging; there was a lot of plastic. Some things could have been packaged in more eco-friendly materials. But then, the food! Some of the items were OK. The fried dumplings for example- dip them in some soy and you can’t really complain. But the soups were so bad, the mixed veg was not good and a lot of the other items were just super bland. Overall, super disappointing. Do not recommend.

👎 Bianca’s

✅ Mostly card packaging

✅ Burger was nice, but salsa a little spicy

❌ Cheese for the cheesy fries was awful, tasted like powder

❌ Hot dog and wings were underwhelming.

First I want to say that it wasn’t awful, definitely not the worst we’ve ever had, but it wasn’t good enough that we’d order again. I liked that the packaging was mostly card and paper, except for one plastic pot for the nacho cheese sauce. I LIKE that they put the sauce for the Cheesy Fries on the side though- could have been a soggy, wet mess otherwise!

We ordered the Bianca’s Burger, a hot dog, Buffalo Wings and cheesy fries and the food was a bit of a mixed bag.

Bianca’s burger- overall, quite nice. Juicy and well cooked. The salted cabbage added some crunch and wasn’t too salty. The caramelised onions added some sweetness and I love that sweet + salty contrast. The salsa was a bit of a let down. One side of the burger didn’t have any, and on the other side it was super spicy. Needed more sour cream, I didn’t spot any.

Hot dog- the bun was really nice, very soft and fluffy and tasty, but the rest let us down. Not enough toppings and the sausage itself was horrible.

Buffalo wings- nice coating, good taste but needed more sauce and they left on the end bit of the wing which you don’t eat. Would have been nicer with that part cut off and required half the packaging.

👎 Tiffany’s Bistro

✅ The wings were OK

❌ Included cutlery when this was not requested

❌ Dumplings were wrapped in paper which stuck to the dumplings so we had to rip half the dumpling cases off

❌ Dumplings were slimy and awful

❌ Only had one calzone on the menu but sent us a different one?!

Not a good experience. To be fair about the cutlery it was at least wood instead of plastic but it’s still waste. REDUCE is what we should be aiming for. People ordering takeaway to their homes have cutlery! Do not add it unless it is requested.

As for the food, Arvid felt the wings were OK and I didn’t mind the sauce but the chicken was tough and chewy in my opinion. But that was the highlight. On the menu the calzone lists a bunch of cheeses, but the calzone we received was a capricciosa, something neither of us would ever order. It was watery and tasteless and so disappointing. The dumplings were just a total shit show. They were in a cardboard box but wrapped in thin paper which the steamed dumplings were totally stuck to and you could not pull the paper off without ripping off the casing of the dumplings so they were totally ruined. The little bit of meat we did manage to salvage was super slimy and just ugh. Not one we’ll try again.

👎 Frying Coddy

❌ The food was appalling

❌ Delivery took ages although more down to Wolt

❌ Condiments came in plastic pots

I think this might be the worst food I have ever eaten. We ordered fish and chips x 2, fried calamari and some mushy peas and overall it was inedible. The mushy peas was the weirdest consistency I’ve ever seen, some kind of neon colour and more like a pea-like paste and it was full of MINT and some other really unpleasant flavours that just did not go with peas or fish at all. It was so bad I had to spit it out.

The fish portion was tiny, which ended up being a blessing as it was so bad. It smelled so fishy, it was like it had been left out on the counter for a few days and it tasted like it had as well. The fries were cold, soggy and too oily. The only way we ended up filling our stomachs was by smothering bread in butter and filling up on chip butties. The rest went straight in the bin and we HATE wasting food. Do not recommend at all.

🆕👎 The Meatball Guys

❌ SO MUCH SALT

✅ Drinks were in cans (not plastic bottles)

✅ Mostly card packaging

Oh god just no. Everything was so salty it was painful. We had two meatball subs, sweet potato fries and noisette potatoes and we could hardly eat anything. The Italian Stallion was the least salty and was, at least, edible, although not something we’d order again. The rest was entirely inedible. Big no.

Bolt Food app delivery Malta

Restaurant delivery on Bolt Food

Bolt Food is comparable to Uber Eats from other countries. Same style of app and service. The Bolt and Wolt apps have the most selection, basically all restaurants in Malta will be listed on at least one of the apps. Bolt has a great notification and tracking process where it lets you know when someone has seen the order, when it’s being prepared, when a driver has been assigned, if the driver is also taking other orders, where the driver is and how long until it’ll get to you.

Some of my favourites for delivery from Bolt are:

  • TukTuk is my favourite takeaway on the island, offering South Indian inspired dishes

  • KebabJi for Lebanese food

  • Manouche Craft Bakery is our breakfast and sweet treat favourite.

There will be more or less options depending on your location so make sure to download the app and see what places are available to you. Then you can track the progress as the restaurant prepares the food, the courier picks it up and see their exact location as they bike over to you.

Food delivery charges on Bolt Food range from €0 - €5 in my experience.

But it’s not only food that you can get delivered from the Bolt Food app, they also have categories for:

  • Groceries

  • Alcohol

  • Flowers

takeout delivery malta

Best restaurant delivery from Wolt in Malta

Recently we have been using the Wolt app more than Bolt. I used to find it a bit less user friendly- you can’t put a note in with your order (like “no onions please!”) which I think is a really basic must- have that they are missing. But they have quite a few restaurants that you wont find on Bolt, so they must be doing something right. I really love:

  • Proscuiterria has the best pizza I have ever had. Consistent and delicious.

  • Pastaus manages to make great pasta for delivery, which can be tough to achieve!

You can also find some other categories for delivery like:

  • Florists

  • Wine shops

  • Grocery stores + supermarkets

    • Wenzhou Asian Supermarket

    • Greens Supermarket

    • Basic

    • Arkadia

  • Beauty, makeup + health

  • Home + interiors
