Beach Sunset Yoga at Ghajn Tuffieha, Malta
Do I really need to say, for the millionth time, how much I love a good sunset in Malta? I just love everything about them, they are intense yet peaceful, colourful and calming.
The Best Sunsets in Malta
The best sunsets, in my opinion, are when you can watch the sun as it sets into the sea and Ghajn Tuffieha (a.k.a Riviera Bay) is one of the best spots in Malta to watch it happen. Last week some friends and I headed over to Riviera Bay for some sunset yoga with Lotus Room.
I've never done a yoga class before and this particular one was to celebrate the summer solstice. The instructor took it nice and easy on us, and we could basically go at our own pace whilst enjoying the show that the sky put on. It was a slightly cloudy day which only served to make the sunset in Malta even more beautiful. As the sunset on the beach, we were bathed in incredibly deep reds, oranges and yellows. Whilst the yoga was great fun, I could not help but stop to take pictures every now and again as the sky changed and I was blown away each time.
A Quiet Beach in Malta; Even in Summer!
Ghaj Tuffieha is the best spot to watch a beach sunset in Malta. It's surrounded by green hills, with a beautiful 'table mountain' style landscape up to the left. The sand is red, rather than the yellow sand found at Golden Bay, just next door, and, with 200 steps to get to it, Ghajn Tuffieha is usually reasonably, even in summer and especially in the evenings.
There are sunbeds and parasols available to rent, but even on the busiest days you'll generally find a spot to relax in, unlike Golden Bay or Mellieha Bay, which can become so rammed you can't even see the sand. This beautiful sandy beach in Malta is situated up North in/near Mellieha, next to Golden Bay and the Radisson Blu hotel. It's approximately 40-50 minutes on the bus from St Julians, depending on how busy it is, so best to head up really early or nice and late in the afternoon.
There is a restaurant/bar/cafe at Riviera Bay called Riviera Martinique that does pretty good food (at reasonable prices), soft drinks, alcohol and has toilets that any beach goers can use. There is one mens and one womens, plus a separate shower area and they are all pretty well kept. You can even hire out the Riviera Martinique for private events such as beach BBQs, hen and stag dos, buffet events and more.
Sunset Yoga in Malta
This celebration of the summer solstice was held by the Lotus Room Yoga Centre, who I'd never heard of before. The instructor seemed very knowledgeable and friendly and if yoga were something I was going to pursue I'd definitely look into their page for classes and more cool events like this one. Personally, yoga is a bit intense for me. I love the movements, the stretching and the breathing but I can't take the whole immersible lifestyle that goes with it.
I'm uncomfortable with group chanting and touching (however well intentioned) and praying to the sun and sending messages to people or the earth through your mind. I think if you think good thoughts then of course you'll feel better in general and be open to more positivity but I don't think we can heal all the injustice in the world by bending over and thinking nice thoughts. If it works for you, then that is great and I love that, it's just not something I think I'll end up doing regularly. Still, for another beach sunset event, I will twist and bend and pray to the sun, the moon and the sand if it means I can take more pretty pictures like these!
